Overview

This A1 size poster reframes the traditional graphic design history (commonly referred to as "the canon") to create a counter-narrative highlighting the extensive impacts of unicode. Unicode allowed the expansion of computers to include a multitude of languages outside of english as well as the first emoticons. The way design in the modern world relies so heavily on digital accessibility is only possible through unicode. Each text box highlights a designer or specific piece of work as well as important pieces of context in a loose timeline order. The design system emulates early computer UI and aims to feel immersive and nostalgic.

Motion Graphic

After finalizing the poster design, I simplified the message and translated all the content into a motion piece. This 1080x1920 30 second motion graphic serves as a teaser for my topic/poster, using motion to cohere my message for a broader audience. It shares the same visual language as my poster and expresses a short narrative without going into the specifics of my topic. I decided to focus on depicting the dramatic "explosion" of possibilities that unicode created.
